Scotland sailing trip

Tour Hebrides and St. Kilda archipelago

The history, inaccessibility and amazing nature make these islands an exceptional destination.

Round trip St. Kilda, the most remote part of the UK. It is a World Heritage Island in the Atlantic Ocean, 45 miles west of the Outer Hebrides. This isolated archipelago was once home to Britain's most isolated community. The history of the people, the inaccessibility and the amazing nature make the islands an exceptional destination for everyone. The silence, the indescribable views, the rugged coasts with hidden bays and the unique sight of the islands in the distance, is something that someone must see in their life. The Flying Dutchman takes you to these special islands, which can only be reached by ship.

Travel schedule

The indicated program is a guide and can be adjusted under the influence of weather, currents and wind. Flexibility is the rule on this journey.

Day 1 Oban
The sailing trip to St. Kilda starts in Oban, a pleasant fishing town with many attractions. You are welcome on board at 18.00 p.m. and have the opportunity to meet the crew and other guests. There will be a welcome dinner around 19.00 p.m. and everyone will raise a glass on a wonderful journey.

Day 2 Canna
The sailing trip to Canna starts early. Canna is known as'the garden of the Hebrides'and has fertile soils, green pastures and an abundance of wildlife. It has been recognized as a bird sanctuary since 1938 and supports more than 20.000 nesting seabirds, including puffins, auks and guillemots. On the way you pass the impressive Duart castle of Duart, a beautiful sight from the water.

Day 3 Lewis and Harris
The sailing trip continues with a visit to the Outer Hebrides, Harris and Lewis. The ship sails to the southern part with deep bays and high mountains. Here you can see the landscape, where the inspiration for the beautiful Harris Tweed comes from. The west coast of the island has beautiful beaches, all flanked by dunes and Machair (a unique plant). The islands are so remote that only a few tourists make the effort to come here.

Day 4 and 5 St Kilda
At first light the sailing trip to St. Kilda begins. This volcanic archipelago with its spectacular landscapes is located off the coast of the Hebrides and consists of the islands of Hirta, Dun, Soay and Boreray. It has some of the highest cliffs in Europe, with large colonies of rare and endangered bird species, especially puffins and boobies.
On land, you can walk around the abandoned village and visit the hundreds of small stone huts known as cleits. People have lived on the island of Hirta for thousands of years. Hirta is part of the Saint Kilda archipelago, located in the North Atlantic Ocean. The community that Hirta had inhabited permanently for two millennia eventually went under at the hands of fundamentalist ministers and epidemics. In 1930 the last residents were evacuated.

The trip also goes to Stac Lee and Boreray to visit the largest gannet colony in the world. This sight of millions of sea birds circling around the rocks and coming in to nest on the steep rock face is overwhelming.
Puffins, guillemots and olives are all there at this time of the year. You will probably also come across seals, eagles and deer. Sharp eyes can spot basking sharks and minke whales that come to feed on the plankton-rich waters of the Western Isles.

Day 6 Barbara
This day the sailing trip continues to Barra, where the ship moors in Castlebay. Here you will visit Kisimul Castle, which is located in the bay. The stronghold of the MacNeils is the only remaining medieval castle in Barra.

Day 7 Tobermory
After breakfast, the next destination is the picturesque and quaint fishing village of Tobermory with its cozy center, beautiful pubs and restaurants. The lively harbor is the starting point for a small fishing fleet. If time permits it is possible to visit the local distillery.

Day 8 Scottish west coast and Oban
Today the journey back to Oban begins. During the voyage the ship sails along the rugged coast of Mull with its unspoiled beauty. It is a wonderful experience with undoubtedly beautiful photo opportunities.

Day 9 Oban
The beautiful tour is coming to an end. After an extensive breakfast it is time to say goodbye to the Flying Dutchman and her crew.
