Grand tour Whiskey

A journey to the most famous whiskey distilleries on Mull, Jura and the ultimate whiskey paradise Islay.Whiskey Journey Islay: An unforgettable journey of discovery along the Scottish West Coast and the islands of the Hebrides aboard the Flying Dutchman. It will be an exciting whiskey journey through a fantastic area and to beautiful islands. This trip is also recommended for those who are not interested in visiting whiskey distilleries.

Possible travel schedule

Indicated program is a guideline and can be adjusted under the influence of weather, current and wind. Flexibility is the rule on this trip.

Day 1: Oban
You will be welcomed on board from 18.00 pm and you will be introduced to the crew and your fellow passengers. This is followed by a welcome dinner with a small whiskey tasting and the company raises a glass on a beautiful journey. Oban is beautifully situated at the foot of the Lorn Mountains. High above the city is McCraighs Tower, a XNUMXth century replica of the Collosseum. Oban has been called the jewel of the west highlands, with its winding streets and picturesque bay filled with yachts, ferries and small fishing boats. Tall ship Flying Dutchman is located on the north pier, less than a hundred meters from the famous Oban whiskey distillery.

Day 2: Mull
The day starts with a delicious breakfast, after which interested parties are given a tour of the Oban Whiskey distillery. It is an interesting and clear tour where you see whiskey barrels with a capacity of 35.000 liters! Of course there is a possibility to taste and buy. After the tour, the Flying Dutchman sails to Tobermory on the Isle of Mull. Along the way, the crew gives sailing instructions, so that anyone who wants to can and may help hoist the sails. Tobermory is the largest town on the island, located in the northeast. It is a charming little place with brightly colored houses. Tobermory is also known for its arts centers and good pubs and eateries. Of course the famous Tobermory distillery is worth a visit. En route, the ship sails right past the beautifully restored Duart Castle.

Day 3: Staffa and Iona
Today the sailing ship sets course for Staffa and Iona. The uninhabited island of Staffa is famous for Fingal's cave. The awe-inspiring cathedral-like cave is 70 meters long and 20 meters high. This place inspired Mendelsohn to create “Hebridean Overture”. It is an unforgettable experience to go with the zodiac to this remote piece of rock. The highlight are the puffins that occur on Staffa.

At the south-west tip of Mull lies the small island of Iona. an Irish priest and prince who would later become Saint Columba. This small island has a unique place in the history of Scotland because in 563 the Irish priest Columba came to the already holy island with the aim of spreading Christianity across Scotland. It ignites the imagination of thousands who travel here every year such as monks, pilgrims, clan chiefs and kings.

Day 4 & 5 Port Ellen (Islay)
Today the whiskey trip goes to Islay, the whiskey island par excellence. Islay owes its fame to the nine distilleries, which produce millions of liters of liquid gold. Due to the various taxes levied on alcohol, it is said to be the most heavily taxed part of Great Britain. Many distilleries have their own jetty. With the ship, the company can visit Lagavullin, Ardbeg, Bunnahabhan, Laphroig and Caol Ila in this way.

Day 6: Jura
The Flying Dutchman sails on to Jura and to the Isle of Jura distillery. Jura is a paradise of pristine wilderness and natural beauty. Jura comes from Norwegian and means 'Deer Island', still an appropriate name because some 5.500 deer outnumber the human population of 180.

Wildlife enthusiasts can find more than 100 species of birds, such as golden eagles, as well as goats, seals, rabbits, hares, stoats and otters. You can take a trip to the secluded farm of Banhill, 37 kilometers north of Craighhouse. That is where the writer George Orwell wrote his masterpiece '1984' in the XNUMXs. He correctly described it as “an extremely inaccessible place”.

Day 7: Scottish West Coast
After a sumptuous breakfast, the ship returns to Oban, heading along the beautiful Scottish West Coast where the space and vistas on the Isle of Mull reveal the beauties of unspoilt Scotland. In the evening there is a delicious closing dinner on board and the passengers talk about this fantastic whiskey journey.

Day 8: Oban
Unfortunately, this wonderful Whiskey trip to Islay has come to an end, and after an extensive breakfast it is time to say goodbye to each other.
