Round trip Islay whiskey festival

Thursday 26 May 2022 18: 00 t / m Saturday 04 June 2022 10: 00

Beautiful sailing trip to the Islay whiskey festival

Step aboard for a 10-day whiskey tour to the Islay whiskey festival: a whiskey lover's paradise. Once a year, Islay is all about whiskey and music. Much of Islay is made up of peat, which has been exposed to the elements: wind, rain and the seawater of the Atlantic Ocean.
The peat is burned to malt the barley and gives the single malts here their salty seaweed taste. Here you will visit the most famous whiskey distilleries. It will be an exciting Whiskey journey in Scotland through a fantastic area. During this trip you will visit almost all open days of the various distilleries. During these open days there are various options for tastings or special whiskey masterclasses. If you are interested in this, you can register for it individually.

Travel information

The indicated program is a guide and can be adjusted under the influence of weather, currents and wind. Flexibility is the rule on this journey.

Day 1 Oban
The journey to the Islay whiskey festival starts in Oban, a cozy fishing town located in a beautiful bay. From 18.00 pm everyone is welcomed on board and introduced to the crew and fellow passengers. This is followed by a welcome dinner with a small whiskey tasting and you raise a glass together on a beautiful journey. If you are in Oban on time this day, you can visit the Oban whiskey distillery.

Day 2 Scottish west coast and Islay
The Flying Dutchman casts off early for the trip to Islay. On the way there is an extensive breakfast. The ship sails a truly beautiful route where you look out your eyes. For example, there is the Corryvreckan whirlpool where the ship sails right past. Ardbeg has named a whiskey after the dark forces of the whirlpool near the island of Jura. You clearly recognize the characteristic peat and smoke flavor of the Ardbeg whisky. After a very nice trip, the captain moors in front of Lagavullin and everyone is taken to the open day by dinghy. At the end of the afternoon everyone is picked up again and goes to Port Ellen.

Day 3 Bruichladdich
This day the Flying Dutchman will remain in Port Ellen and you can take a bus to Bruichladdich where everyone can enjoy all the activities and taste the excellent whiskeys.

Day 4 Caol Ila
The Flying Dutchman leaves early for Caol Ila after a delicious breakfast. The distillery is famous for the single malt Scotch whiskey brand of the same name. Caol Ila has its own jetty where the ship will moor. It is very special to step directly onto the distillery site from the ship.

Day 5 Laphroaig
If all goes well, the journey continues to the Laphroaig distillery. When making Laphroaig, malted barley is dried over burning peat, giving Laphroaig its distinctive rich smoke-packed flavor. The ship anchors very close and everyone is brought ashore with the zodiac. At the end of the day, the ship departs for Port Ellen.

Day 6 Bowmore
The Flying Dutchman remains in Port Ellen and anyone who wants it is taken to Bowmore to attend the open day. Bowmore 'the first Islay Single malt since 1779' has established itself as the first malt distillery on Islay and is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland. Known for its distinctive smoky flavour, handcrafted according to the age-old Bowmore tradition. There is also a small music festival. At the end of the afternoon the Flying Dutchman sails on to Jura.

Day 7 Jurassic
Today the open day of the Jura distillery is on the program. This is so remote that visitors really have to go through a lot of effort to get there. The island of Jura is a paradise of pristine wilderness and natural beauty. The name Jura comes from Norwegian and means 'Deer Island', still an appropriate name because some 5.500 deer outnumber the human population of 180. Wildlife enthusiasts can spot more than 100 species of birds, including golden eagles, goats, seals, rabbits, hares, stoats and otters.

Day 8 Bunnahabhain
This sailing trip Islay whiskey festival is of course not possible without a visit to Bunnahabhain. This beautiful and also remote distillery has a special appearance. You can moor at its own pier. The distillery was built in 1881 and is located just north of Port Askaig. The Bunnahabhain whiskey is one of the milder whiskeys from Islay. The brewery also makes a blend of spirits from all seven Islay distilleries, blended with Northern Island whiskey, under the name Black Bottle. At the end of the day, the route heads to Ardbeg and anchors in front of the distillery. This is a great opportunity to have a whiskey tasting on board after a good meal.

Day 9 Ardbeg and back to Oban
The program is a quiet day. Those wishing to obtain an Islay festival bottle can be landed early by the crew and it is possible to visit Ardbeg. Founded in 1815, Ardbeg makes untamed whiskeys as a tribute to the rugged island of myth. Ardbeg Single Islay Malt is considered to be one of the most complex and at the same time harmonious whiskeys. The beautiful sailing trip back to Oban starts around 2 pm. From the Flying Dutchman you can enjoy the untouched, wild nature of the islands and the Scottish West Coast. The rugged beauty of Jura, the silence on the water, the indescribable views, the rugged coast with surprising bays and quiet fishing villages.

Day 10 Oban
Experiencing an Islay whiskey festival and discovering Scotland's west coast with its beautiful islands was a wonderful journey. After an extensive breakfast it is time to say goodbye.
