sailing scotland whiskey

Sailing, playing music and famous Whiskey distilleries

A wonderful combination of sailing, playing music and visiting famous whiskey distilleries.

This trip differs from other trips because nothing is required or predetermined. Two professional musicians will accompany you on this journey who can inspire others and which you can enjoy with a glass of water of life (whiskey) in hand. Live music every day with the ship's musicians, who play and jam to their heart's content, in the evening in the local pub or on the ship. Anyone who has a warm heart for folk music, whiskey and Scotland can join in and come along. You sail to the most beautiful places in Scotland.

Travel schedule

Day 1 Oban
The Scotland Folk & whiskey journey starts in Oban, a cozy fishing village located in and on a beautiful bay. Here is also the famous Oban Whiskey distillery, which is well worth a visit. You will meet the crew and the other guests during a delicious welcome dinner with a musical note. Then, with a glass of whisky, everyone raises their glass to a wonderful journey.

Day 2 Tobermory
After breakfast a visit to the famous Oban Whiskey Distillery will be made before the captain sets sail for Tobermory. You sail between Morvern and Mull, a mixture of rugged mountain scenery and calm estuaries. On the way you pass Duart Castle a few meters away, an impressive sight. Tobermory is a quaint and colorful fishing village with its well-known distillery. It is the capital of the Isle of Mull with a very pleasant center and one of the coziest and most beautiful pubs in Scotland: the Mishnish, where the musicians may play music until the late hours.

Day 3 Staffa and Colonsay
During this trip the crew tries to sail as much as possible and today the ship sets sail for Staffa. The uninhabited island of Staffa is famous for Fingal's cave. The awesome cathedral-like cave, 70 m long and 20 m high. Getting to this remote stretch of rock by zodiac is an unforgettable experience.

After visiting Staffa you will continue to Colonsay, a very pretty little island with a varied landscape with some beautiful sandy beaches. 125 people live on Colonsay, there is a hotel overlooking the harbour, a café, a bakery, a general store and a post office.

Day 4 Islay & Jura
The journey continues to Islay, the whiskey island par excellence. Islay owes its fame to the 9 distilleries that produce millions of liters of liquid gold. Because of the various taxes levied on alcohol, it is said to be the most heavily taxed part of Britain. You can go to the Bunnahabhain Distillery, which was built in 1886 and can be found on the northeastern tip of the island. After a nice visit, the ship sails on to Jura to spend the night there.

Day 5 Oban
The Flying Dutchman sails today along the beautiful Scottish West Coast towards Oban where the space and views of the Isle of Jura and Mull show the beauties of unspoilt Scotland. Oban was a small fishing village with a sheltered harbour, but with the arrival of a steamship and railway in 1880, Oban became the center for sailings to the inner and outer Hebrides. Oban has been used as a set in many films such as: “Ring of Bright Water” and “Morven Callar”. Jules Verne also uses Oban in his book “The Miracle Ray”.

Day 6 Disembark
Scotland folk & whiskey was a great and varied week where you were able to see the enchanting Scotland in a unique way. After an extensive breakfast it is time to say goodbye to each other.

The ship musicians

Joost grew up in an artistic environment, and has played the violin since childhood, taught in the beginning by his mother, later trained at the conservatory. Very early on there was a great interest in everything related to folk music, bluegrass, country, and more and more string instruments were added. In 2008 he was an official finalist at the Nashville Fiddle Championships in Nashville, Tennessee (more than 100 participants from around the world). Joost has participated in a large number of music and music theater productions, mostly as a soloist on violin but also on other string instruments.

Jord van Es is a singer/songwriter from Utrecht. As the son of Joost van Es, he grew up between music and musicians. At a young age he was active in Les Misérables by Joop van de Ende. Later he could be found with his guitar in many city cafes and on festival stages. Examples that Jord likes to follow are Jim Croce and Passenger. His style has many influences from American bluegrass, but a predilection for Celtic and gypsy jazz also shines through in his playing.
