The ship has a rich past. Standing on the wide deck, everyone feels like a captain when the stately "Stedemeaght" attracts admiring glances. It is the largest three-master on the Dutch inland waterways.

 

The “Stedemaeght” was built in 1926 at the shipyard “Nylands Verkstad” in Oslo as a whaler. A total of 10 pieces were made. The ship was given the name "Pol IV". Whale hunters are meant as the name implies, to hunt whales. They were therefore equipped with a large harpoon gun on the foredeck. After a number of whales had been shot, they were towed to the mother ship, a floating factory, where they disappeared into the large tear jars.

In 1948 the ship was converted into a freighter by shipping company Aktoe bolaget Hilleström from Malmö and was fitted with 2 loading masts. Again it was given a new name: "Kinnekule". In 1957 the ship's hull was extended by 7,5 meters by the Jadewerft in Wilhelmshaven. 

In 1965 the ship came under the Danish flag and shipping company Vishen from Dansde became the new owner. The ship was renamed “Cito”. In 1974 it got a new owner, Hans Olsen Frabricius from Marstal. He gave it the name: “A. Frabricius” and later renamed it “Bent Flinot”.

 

In 1991 the ship was brought to our country because of the beautiful lines and transformed into a showpiece unique and rigged as a three-masted barque.  

The new name “Stedemaeght” was painted on the nameplate and on April 19, 1994 HRH Prince Willem Alexander hoisted the first sail. After a life as a whaler and baltic trader, she started her third life as a sailing ship, namely a three-masted barque, suitable for celebrations and parties.
