Island hopping in the Hebrides

Sail with Steady on the west coast of Scotland and discover one of the most stunning cruising areas in the world. There is a lot to experience during a sailing holiday in the Hebrides, in which there is no sailing according to a specific route. From cozy harbor towns to secluded anchorages, beautiful long sandy beaches and a rich wildlife, in short there is plenty to do or see.

Travel information

On the first day, you will board the ship in Oban at 14.00:300 PM. The Steady is located in the marina on the North Pier, just XNUMX meters from the train station. While enjoying coffee/tea with sandwiches, you get to know each other and the ship. That same afternoon the sails are already raised and the ship leaves Oban. The ship sails to a beautiful anchorage where it also spends the night. After the joint dinner, everyone is informed about the upcoming trip. There is no sailing according to a fixed schedule, the wind determines the route. But what are the options?

Possible route

When the route heads west from Oban through the Sound Of Mull, you can change course past Ardnamurchan Point north or south or west to Barra and beyond.

Heading south, you'll follow the majestic coastline of Mull past Treshnish and on to Staffa. A visit to Fingal Cave is a must, but the landing is highly dependent on the swell.
Further on is the sacred island of Iona where Columba's resonance lives on. As you pass you pass Torrans Rocks and to the south is Colonsay. Here the ship can dock along the pier and when you get on the island you can sample some great ales from the smallest island brewery in the world.
The northern route heads to the more remote Hebrides Islands. Rhum, by far the largest island, possesses a cluster of formidable volcanic peaks. Askival (Ash Mountain) the highest peak, dominates the landscape and the name itself comes from the Vikings who once settled here.
If you are lucky with calm weather, the captain will take you to one of the most amazing anchorages in the world. Nestled at the foot of Skye's Cuillins is Loch Scavaig. A estuary connects the Loch with the waters of Loch Corusk which flow beautifully in here. It is breathtaking to walk around Loch Corusk.
Measuring only 5 by 3 miles, Eigg is by far the most vibrant, populous and welcoming island of the Small Isles. From the An Sgurr, 393 meters, you have a beautiful view of Muck and Rhum. Canna is in many ways the most beautiful of the Small Isles. With its high basalt cliffs home to a colony of puffins. Spend time on the edge of the cliff as they hover in front of you at very close range and dart away further down to catch more eels.
After anchoring for the night, you can surrender to the tranquility of the island, enjoy hiking, bird watching and enjoy the scenery and hospitality of this island community.

On land

Wherever Steady sails, you'll find that each island offers some good short walks of about an hour before setting off and heading for a new anchorage.
There are usually no marinas on these islands so we lay behind our own anchor and use the dinghy to visit the islands. This trip is highly recommended for those who love hiking, wildlife and natural beauty!
During these voyages, destinations are determined on the basis of the ship's weather forecast. This way you can fully enjoy a relaxed holiday and you will fully enjoy the beautiful nature. Sailing experience is not necessary. The crew likes to teach you a lot and involve you in the sailing operations.
