Meander

On an expedition with the Meander

The Meander was built in 1946 at a German shipyard in Hamburg. At the time, this yard in Finkenwerder was known for building strong ships and built the Meander with an ice-reinforced hull. This means that the Meander is an ice class vessel and can operate easily in the Arctic. Meander was operated as a fishing vessel until the 90s. In 1995 she was converted into a luxury sailing ship for the purpose of transporting passengers. The ship has withstood storms up to wind force 11 around Cape Horn in the infamous Drake-Passage without any problems and can therefore be called a well-tested. In 2016 she was bought by Heine van de Molen. He brought her back into charter and rebuilt her. Today she can carry 12 passengers and carry up to 5 crew members. She sails at a good speed while still providing comfort and coziness. Meander is equipped according to Dutch laws and regulations for an unlimited sailing area. Modern navigation equipment, generators and even solar panels ensure that the Meander can operate independently for a long time.

Interior

Our nicest place on board is the great seating and dining area on the campaign deck of the Meander. If necessary, shelter from the sun or rain. Furthermore, the front and between decks offer additional seating areas. There is air conditioning on the ship for warm regions and when it is cold, we have good central heating. A small sauna is available for enthusiasts. In the deckhouse there is a cozy lounge with a separate kitchen and a view of the surroundings. A beer tap and central cooling with soft drinks and wines are available. Below decks are the comfortable double cabins, each with a washbasin. Two separate showers and three separate WCs.

The wheelhouse

The wheelhouse is the nerve center of the ship and here is all equipment to sail safely across the world's seas, but it is also a wonderful place to stay, steer, shelter or participate in the watch.

Sailing with the Meander

The traditional rigging and the robust underwater hull make this two-masted staysail schooner a particularly seaworthy sailing vessel. Due to its hull shape and length, the Meander moves smoothly in sea conditions. The simple operation of the sails and the good sailing characteristics mean that even people without sailing experience can actively participate in sailing.
