Scotland sailing trip

Sail & Whiskey expedition Hebrides

Discover the Hebrides with the Flying Dutchman and visit the most famous whiskey distilleries. The journey starts in Oban with a visit to the Oban distillery and continues to Jura one of the most appealing distilleries which is so remote that visitors have free access. And of course Islay the ultimate whiskey paradise with multiple whiskey distilleries. On to Campbeltown with the unique Springbank distillery. In short: an exciting journey through a fantastic area. Because you sail through beautiful Lochs, with surprising views of the rugged mountains of the Highlands.

This trip is not only for those interested in visiting distilleries. Sailing and nature are also central, there is plenty to enjoy from the ship and on land to enjoy the unspoiled nature that Scotland has to offer. The Flying Dutchman sails with an international travel group on board. Although the crew is Dutch, the language on board is English. The guests come from the Netherlands, Switzerland, England, Germany and Scotland.

The following program is a guide and may need to be adjusted due to weather conditions, currents and wind. Flexibility is the rule on this trip.

Day 1 - Oban
After boarding you will meet the other guests and the crew during dinner.

Day 2 - Mull
After a short crossing, past the impressive Duart Castle, the ship moors in the fishing village of Tobermory. You can visit the local distillery here.

Day 3 - Staffa and Iona
The uninhabited island of Staffa is famous for Fingal's cave. The awe-inspiring cathedral-like cave, 70m long and 20m high, is helpless against the constant waves of the Atlantic Ocean. This place inspired Mendelsohn to “Hebridean Overture”. It is an unforgettable experience to go to this remote piece of rock by zodiac. Puffins can also be found on Staffa.

The small island of Iona is located at the South-West point of Mull. In Gealic / Celtic: Chaluim Chille, the island of Colm Cille, an Irish priest and prince who would later become Saint Columba. This small island has a unique place in the history of Scotland. It ignites the imagination of thousands who travel here every year such as monks, pilgrims, clan heads and kings. During the sailing trip from one island to the other you may see giant sharks, minke whales and dolphins.

Day 4 & 5 - Islay and Port Ellen
Islay is the island of ten distilleries and thus the largest whiskey producing island. For those interested, the crew can arrange viewing at Bunnahabhain, Lagavulin, Ardbeg or Laphroaig.

Day 6 - Jura
Today the ship sails on to Jura and to the Isle off Jura distillery. The island of Jura is a paradise of untouched wilderness and natural beauty. The name Jura comes from Norwegian and means 'Deer Island', still an appropriate name because some 5.500 deer exceed the human population of 180.

Lovers of wild nature will find more than 100 species of birds, such as golden eagles, but also goats, seals, rabbits, hares, ermines and otters. You can take a trip to the remote Banhill farm, 37 miles north of Craighhouse. That is where the writer George Orwell wrote his masterpiece '1984' in the XNUMXs. He accurately described it as “an extremely inaccessible place”.

Day 7 - Back to Oban
On the return trip to Oban you sail along the beautiful Scottish West Coast with a view of the Isle of Mull and beautiful views of the unspoilt Scottish nature.

Day 8 - Oban
After breakfast, the sailing vacation came to an end.
